Prof. Ghent did me a solid when I was 13 years old, that I have never forgotten. I knew her through the S.T.E.P/S.E.S.P. program at MCC. My mother had made me a deal to pay for half of my high school yearbook, if I earned the other half of the $14 myself. Prof. Ghent heard me talking about it one Saturday and she offered to give me work. One wintry Saturday afternoon, she drove me home to her horse farm. To my surprise, she wanted me to work in the barn, but I didn't have the right boots. She put me to work vacuuming her home instead. From time to time, I still wish that I'd gotten to see the horses. Her kindness stays with me. And I think of her whenever I look at my 1987 yearbook.

Sorry I was late for this. Mrs. Ghent would have laughed because I was late for everything. She tolerated me because I loved her class, was an active participant and we had fun in the process. My buddy Craig and I were the two white kids in her History of Black Literature class. I think she respected that, while we in turn found a supportive and creative gold mine in Mrs. Ghent that was such a relief from anything else we were doing. I thought of her so many times over the years. Thanks for getting my "Napkin Song" published, as embarrassing as it was. God bless and keep you and your family, Jeanne, you live on in the hearts of so many that you touched.

Dear family to Mrs. Jeanne K. Ghent,
It is with sadness and also happiness I write and send this note.
First of all, my deepest and heartfelt condolences to everyone in the family.
I had the pleasure and honor to be in one of Mrs. Ghent’s classes in MCC. She was not only a very knowledgeable professor but a wonderful human being. We had the chance to interact as professor and student but she left a mark in me of a sensitive, loving, tactful wonderful woman. I learned so much from her.
I am leaving my name and number in case of you would like to call me.
So much to say about a wonderful human being.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Eduardo Mérida

My condolences to the family. Jeanne was a wonderful, bright personality that filled a room with hope and optimism. She was one of my first mentors at MCC. She will be missed.
