Kevin Leo Smith left a lasting impression on those who knew him at Greece Athena High School. We graduated in 1984 and he was part of our homecoming committee charged with building the Olympic themed senior float at my house. He worked hard, so hard, in fact, that I remember he hit his head with a hammer! I can't remember if he needed stitches, but in true high school form, we called him "Hammerhead" for a while! He had a great laugh and the most kind personality. It is not a surprise he was such a success in life. The world lost a good soul way too soon. Sincerely, Debbie Nelson (he called me Nellie)

Kevin and I shared several engineering classes together at USMA. He was always an earnest and kind hearted person. I am saddened by his early departure and pray for solace and good fortune for those he has loved and left behind.

Kevin was not in my life for very long, but he definitely left a lasting impression. He always pushed everyone around him to do better. He helped me with school work and encouraged me to take harder more advanced classes. He was an intellectual person and we had great conversations about the military, politics, greek mythology, comic books. We played chess and he taught me strategies and tactics. I only beat him a few times and I always wondered if he let me win. He was a genuine and sincere person, the kind of guy that was easy to look up to. He will be missed and I will always remember him when I push myself and others to strive to do better. I consider myself lucky that I got to know him.

Kevin was my roommate 1st Semester Plebe (freshman) year at West Point and company mate for all 4 years. He was always kind and a bit more mature than most of us. He had a gentle, but firm approach to his leadership style but rarely would you see him raise his voice. He had a subtle sense of humor and was amazing on the dance floor when we had the opportunity to cut loose.
We lost touch after graduation and believe I may have seen him at one of the earlier reunions but after our 35th reunion, the C-1 table made a pact with each other to make contact with at least one company mate that was not present. I sent Kevin a note on FB that following week telling him we missed him at the reunion...I never followed up and I am sorry that I hadn't.
I hope he went peacefully and wish his family my deepest sympathies.
Rest in Peace, Kevin.
CD, C-1 Company mate, and '88 classmate
