Obituary of Rev. Dr. Howard Chaney Sr.

ROCHESTER, NY – July 3, 2024
Rev. Dr. Howard Chaney Sr. was born October 10, 1932 in Birmingham, Alabama to the late Reverend Andrew Jackson Chaney and to the Louvenia Gaston Chaney.
The family moved to western Pennsylvania when Rev. Chaney was a teenager. He graduated from East Pittsburgh High School with honors. His collegiate studies were pursed at American Bible College, Pineland, FL. LaSalle School of Law, Chicago, IL and Moody Bible Institute, Chicago, IL. He was also a veteran of the US Air Force receiving an honorable discharge after 4 years of service during the Korean conflict.
Rev. Chaney’s varied employment experiences were as follows: Union railroad Co of Est Pittsburgh, PA, Duquesne Works, US Steel, VA Hospital, United States Postal Service (Pittsburgh, PA) and retired from the United States Federal Government as an inspector for the Equal Employment Commission. He was the recipient of numerous awards, certificates and commendations.
In his limited recreational time, his interests included fishing, reading, gardening and truly enjoyed sports.
He was called to preach the Gospel at the age of 25. He was licensed and ordained to exercise his God given gift in the work of the ministry. He pastored various churches throughout western PA over 26 years. In 2005 after marrying the love of his life, he joined the Aenon Missionary Baptist Church where he served as an under the leadership of Pastor James L. Cherry, Sr., his brother-in-law. Reverend Chaney served as an associate minister at Aenon until he went home to Glory.
Rev. Dr. Howard Chaney, Sr. took his rest from his earthen vessel on July 3, 2024 at Highland Hospital in Rochester, NY. Rev. Chaney was preceded in death by a son, Terry Chaney. Siblings: Andrew (Pearl) Chaney, Wilbur (Mary) Chaney, Eunice (James) Cherry, Alice (George) Jackson, Calvin Chaney and Leon (Debbie) Chaney.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted wife of 19 years, Lady Annette Imes-Chaney. A blended family of nine children: Renee Pettus of Rancho Cordova, CA; Howard (Ricarda) Chaney, Jr. of Evans GA; Robbie Michele Chaney of Coropolis, PA; David Chaney of Pittsburgh, PA; Tilda (Sam) Wiliams of Winston-Salem, NC; Crystal (Lance) McByers; Jester Imes, Sr.; Priscilla Imes and Earlene (Quinn) Lorick all of Austin, TX. One brother, Bryon (Karen) Chaney of Laurel, MD; 32 grandchildren, 54 great grandchildren and 14 great, great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and church family.
We will always remember his parting words to us…
“I want you to remember two things… God loves you and so do I”
He may be gone, but he will NEVER be forgotten!
Friends may call Thursday, July 18 from 10:00 AM - 12 PM at Aenon Baptist Church, 175 Genesee Street, Rochester, NY. The Funeral Service to Celebrate his life will immediately follow at 12:00 Noon. Interment Riverside Cemetery, Rochester, NY.
