Obituary of Lois Ellen Grady

Charlotte, NC – May 27, 2024
Lois Ellen (Moye) Grady was born January 30, 1924, in Rochester, NY to the union of Leila Odell Shumake and Ernest Moye. She is preceded in death by both parents, her siblings - Alberta Romaine Hartzog, Ernestine Weaver, Howard Moye, Remson Moye and Donald Franklin Moye (killed in World War II). Lois departed this life on Monday, May 27, 2024.
Lois Grady became a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Rochester at a young age. She attended #3 Elementary School and graduated from Madison High School June 18, 1943.
Lois and Sylvester Grady united in marriage in 1952.
Lois worked at numerous companies, including Eastman Kodak Company from the 1960s until retirement in 1986.
Lois was a member of the Female Auxiliary of I. B. P. O. E. of W. of the Elks. She was also a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Pennington-Moye VFW Post 9251, served as past state president of the New York State Female Auxiliary Association and 3 years as a dedicated trustee of the Pennington Moye Ladies Auxiliary, along with a certificate of merit. She also volunteered at the Baden Street Settlement in the 1950s. Lois received a certificate of appreciation from the Southern Poverty Law Center and her name was said to be added to the "Wall of Tolerance" in Montgomery, Alabama. Other volunteer work was for the Disabled American Veterans and at the Veterans Hospital in Rochester, NY.
Lois loved to bowl on the bowling league she was a member of for many years in Rochester. She attended exercise classes at the YMCA and spent many afternoons at the Montgomery Center, including being a member of the Senior Club, attending meetings, playing cards, traveling and enjoying friends she'd known for many years. Upon moving to live with her daughter in 2016 to Monroe, NC she attended the senior center exercise classes and attended church and other activities. Lois leaves to cherish 2 sons, Richard Grady (Ella), Fort Myers, Florida, Edward Grady of Coyle, Oklahoma and 1 daughter, Sylvia Newbill (Gary) of Monroe, North Carolina. She also leaves a special nephew, Bernard Mitchell (Venessa), and special niece Geraldine Walker (Wallace), both of Rochester, NY, 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Lois lived a good life.
Special thank you to Gary Newbill, who was always there for her, and Bernard Mitchell,her nephew, who was her contact person in Rochester and contacted me whenever there was a health issue.
Sincere thanks are extended to East Campus - 1st Baptist Church of Marshville, Pastor & Sister Summers along with our church family for their love and kindness. Also, to VIA Home Care and Hospice in Monroe and Charlotte, NC, and their nurses, social workers and health care workers.
