Please share a memory of Mattie to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ROCHESTER, NY – April16, 2024
Mattie Johnson was born on June 10, 1925, in Anderson, South Carolina to the late Willie and Lily Williams. She had two sisters, Inez and Dorothy.
She began her education at Rosenwald Schools. At the age of 15, Mattie alongside her cousin Roberta, moved to D.C. After a short stay, they relocated to Rochester, New York.
In 1963 she married Raymond Johnson. They lived in married bliss for 40 years before his passing in 2003.
Mattie was affectionately known to family and friends as “Ma Mattie”. She loved cooking, shopping, and working in her yard. She loved flowers. Ma Mattie also enjoyed going to the nail salon with Clara and getting her hair done. Her and Clara shared a special bond over the past 10 plus years. She was like the daughter she never had. Though she did not bear any children of her own, Ma Mattie loved all children.
Mattie accepted Christ as her Savior and was baptized at a young age. God was truly first in her life. She was a woman who believed in family values and doing right by one another. Always willing to help with those in need.
On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, she peacefully passed away at home at the age of 98.
Mattie is predeceased by her father, Willie Williams; mother, Lily Williams; sisters, Inez McDonald and Dorothy Williams; cousin/sister, Roberta Sturgis; and her Goddaughter, Carol Jackson.
