ROCHESTER, NY – April 5, 2017
Mattie Martha Snowden Brown was born November 9, 1934 in Lake City, South Carolina; the beloved daughter of Hughie Snowden Sr. and Louiza Brown Snowden. She departed this life on April 5, 2017.
At an early age, she accepted Christ while attending Bethesda Methodist Church. Mattie graduated from Carver High School in Lake City, South Carolina. Mattie was married to Julian Brown Sr. for 62 years. To this union two children were born.
Mattie moved to Rochester, New York where she continued her education and training in the field of cosmetology and became a licensed beautician. Mattie was employed by the State Hospital and later-work for Eastman Kodak for 20 years.
Mattie was a devoted member of the Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church for over 50 years. She served as a Class Leader, member of the Steward Board, Ideal Club and served as President of the Yadseut Club (1985-1995) and the Pastor's Aide Society. She was one of the founding members of the Do Something About It Club that recently celebrated 45 years of service.
Mattie had a love for gardening, cooking and hats (the bigger the better).
Mattie as predeceased by; her brothers, Bennie and Hughie Snowden Jr.
Mattie leaves to cherish her memory; Husband, Julian Brown Sr.; Son, Julian Brown Jr.; Daughter, Louiza Shereta Brown Harris; Grandchildren, Vanessa (Rob) Stewart, Jerome (Kabuki) Brown, Seema Brown, Julian Brown, III (fiancee' Jessica), Sherod Harris, Shawn Harris and Sherika Dozier; Great Grandchildren, Nia Lewis, Alaya Stewart, Dante Stewart, Semaj George, Chase Harris, Prince and Kimani Brown, Shaiojzia Moore and Keon Gaskins; Sisters and Brothers, Reather Leigh, Tena Randall, Robert (Marylee) Snowden, Louis Snowden, Truman Snowden, James (Ruth) Tisdale, Sanders (Delores) Tisdale, Jerry (Daisy) Tisdale John (Chaoying) Tisdale, Ora (Willie) Pendergrass and Ann Burgess; Sisters-in-law, Christine Brown of Philadelphia, PA, Josephine Snowden-Miller and Virginia Tisdale; Goddaughters, Carolyn Carrol and Victoria Smith and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Service to Celebrate her life will be held Monday, April 10, 2017 at Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church 549 Clarissa Street, Rochester, NY 14608 with Rev. Dr. Kenneth Q. James, Pastor Officiating. Interment Riverside Cemetery.
