Obituary of Dr. Dawlat Zaky
Please share a memory of Dr. Dawlat to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
ROCHESTER, NY – December 15, 2023
Dawlat Zaky was born on September 28th,1938 to Louli Girgis Ghobrial and Riad Helmy Bestawros. Her recorded birth date was October 1st so that was the day we celebrated. She had two brothers, Esmat and Nabil. She enjoyed playing all sorts of games with her brothers and going for bike rides along the Nile and in Alexandria.
She attended English Mission College for primary and secondary school. She played handball and excelled academically and was top of her class. She attended Cairo University for medical school where she again finished top of her class. She did training in Bacteriology. She was introduced to Amin Zaky and was married in 1963. She was a loving wife to him for 57 years.
She and Amin ultimately emigrated to the United States and found a home in Rochester, NY where she had to complete internship and residency again to practice. She completed training in Infectious Disease as well and came to practice for many years at St. Mary’s hospital training many interns and residents. She worked alongside Dr. McCabe, Dr. Patanella and Dr. Connelly and later Dr. Wahba. She was loved by the staff and colleagues she worked with and by her patients.
She had two children, Joseph and Mary and was a loving mother to both. I will always remember her wanting to treat us with her homemade chocolate chip cookies or lamb with okra and vermicelli rice. She would tell me stories when I was little and act them out as we were cooking and make me laugh. She had many hobbies including cooking, gardening and knitting and would enjoy walking by the beach singing hymns. She was a loving grandmother to Amina and Matthew and would play with them, entertaining them with bubbles, balloons and play-dough. She would make sure you never left the house hungry and that you always felt loved.
She had a deep faith in Christ and exhibited this in her daily life. She was constantly doing things for others and showed in her every word and action what it was to be kind. I remember so many times patients would come up to her when we were out and give her a hug or express their gratitude. She shared herself and the love and faith she had with everyone freely. She was beloved by so many and touched so many lives. Her children and grandchildren will miss her and know that she has gone to her heavenly home to be reunited with her husband Amin. May God bless her lovely soul.
