Our Loving Aunt Alice
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13, NKJV).
Aunt Alice was a loving, kind, and giving Christian. She was the same each time we were in her presence. We appreciated her candor and thoughtful comments that were delivered lovingly. Her kindness was exemplified in her interactions with us. She did not hesitate to share when the need arose because God was her role model and strength.
Aunt Alice gave God glory and praise during worship. She enjoyed singing in the Providence Mass Choir and the City-Wide Chorus of Columbus. One of the songs she sang was “Search Me, Lord” by Thomas A. Dorsey. When she sang, we felt the Holy Spirit intervening and encouraging our hearts to trust God. His grace and mercy and her faith kept her in His eternal presence.
Aunt Alice was a living example of how to be kind in ways that encouraged us. She was one of our role models who demonstrated what a Christian family relationship looked like. She incorporated love as one of the most essential ingredients in the relationship. One way she showed love was by cooking and serving scrumptious meals. We enjoyed eating her assortment of delicious cakes and pies baked with love. We appreciated her for being our aunt and helping us when needed. For example, she greatly supported her sister, our mother, during her illness. Aunt Alice was discreet in how she gave wise suggestions that were beneficial for the family. She wanted the family to love and help each other and stay in touch. She knew God’s grace, mercy, and blessings gave her the strength to love, be kind, and share her gifts. Indeed, Aunt Alice’s life testified that she could do everything through Christ, who strengthened her.

I want to send my condolences to the family at this time. Grief is something a person deals with differently; it can be sad, a shock, a celebration, and acceptance over time. I would like to share some of my fond memories on My neighbor and family, Sis. Alice Smith. My name is Shlanda Ball and I am a part of the Richardson family, and stay next door to Sis Smith. The things I loved and enjoyed about Sis. Smith was her care, concern, and love for other people. I remember growing up and her mother Sis. Mary Harrison was living; she did the same thing to her daughter Sis. Moorehead did cook, and took care of her mother until her death. What wonderful traits from generation to generation. I remember the pecan tree and beautiful rose bushes in the yard and how I admired it. I have been singing in the choir since age 5 and Sis. Smith would sing in the Senior Choir and I loved to hear her sing. "Tis That Old Ship Zion'' She had a unique voice, and I feel no one could imitate. She would call me by my middle name Dionna though say “Dionne.” I never corrected her, really enjoyed the uniqueness, and relationship we shared. Sis Alice would tell me the right things to do as well as my cousin she raised. She and my uncle Peter; they called him “Billy" have a good connection as well. He would bring back cakes and sweet potatoes to the house and it was delicious, and I remember when put together a benefit program for him when had a stroke, and it was successful. I really appreciated her for the things she did in the church with care and love. She had hip surgery at one point and her strength, resiliency, and perseverance through God's grace and faith kept her. No matter what, she leaned on God. I lost my mother Georgia Richardson in 2013, and my Uncle Billy 5 1/2 weeks apart and the love and cards she sent I still have them. Later, Sis. Anderson started the Women's Ministry and she was a part of this organization; she paid close to details and bestowed her wisdom upon the younger women, and it was refreshing and rewarding to hear experiences and what empathize a christian walk etc. Sis. Alice Smith will truly be missed. There is so much to say about this wonderful lady of God. Please cherish her precious memories and continue to lead by the example. God Bless! Shlanda Ball and The Richardson Family
