I am writing this on February 25, 2024. I only found out his passing a few days ago from Barbara. Talik was a true friend and confidante, not just in music (he was the main inspiration for my program "Other Aspects"), but helped me in my darkest time. The changes in life eventually kept us apart, but I did my best to stay in touch. I wish I could have done so more often. He will always be with me. Thank you for all you've done, dear friend.

Rev. Walker was my pastor and a friend. Our paths first crossed in the middle 70s when we formed a group, “Concerned Citizens of Henrietta”. Later our group founded the Christian Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Truly the most humble, educated and honorable pastor I have know or had the pleasure of working with.

Giving thanks for the amazing and impactful life of Pastor Walker. I met him in 2002 when I moved to Rochester to dance with Garth Fagan Dance. My Aunt Furelise brought me to church with her and I instantly felt at home. Pastor Walker vowed to my Parents that he would look out for me. I joined the church under watch care as my church was in California. Pastor Walker was a true Shepherd to his congregation. Feeding us when we needed the nourishment from The Lord. Inspiring us. Educating us. And oh his love for Sister Walker and his family was so beautiful too. Heavens gain is our loss but we’ll see him in the morning. As this is not our home. We love you Pastor Walker, keep shining bright over and through us. And The Lord is saying, “Well done my good and faithful servant.”

My most recent memory of Dr. Walker is how he served on my Doctor of Ministry thesis committee. He was encouraging and uplifting. As I answered my call to ministry and journeyed through seminary and many challenging times as a minister, Dr. Walker was always there to push me and encourage me to remain steadfast and faithful. He was a friend, a mentor, and like a father to me. I will hold a special place in my heart for him always. My tribute to a great intellect, resistance and social justice icon, prophet of the Lord, and amazing pastor.

In a world that feeds on mistrust, animosity and oppression, the Rev. Dr. John Walker persistently worked in our wider community as a tireless, prophetic champion of mutual respect, understanding, equality, and justice, always employing the most potent force--Love. I was privileged to work shoulder to shoulder with him in the Rush-Henrietta Interracial Clergy Council, which he co-founded with then-Supervisor Michael Yudelson. He helped hold high the vision of not only justice, but the Beloved Community. And by his words and example, he inspired others to embrace that vision and find ways to live into it together. I will always cherish my memories of Rev. Dr. Walker and let them continue to uplift and inspire me.

As one of the founding members of Christian Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Henrietta, NY where Rev. Walker was the pastor, I came to know him quite well. When my husband, Wendell, and I moved to Georgia, Rev. Walker kept in touch by sending us news articles from the Rochester City School District because my husband and I had worked in the system. When our son, Adrian, passed he wrote, "The special moments in your life will never change; they will always be in your heart, today and forevermore for those we love remain with us in so many ways...their spirits are part of all we do and all we are." May these words comfort you as they did us in our loss.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Dr .Walkers family.
Rev. Dr. John Walker was a community icon, great Professor, loving parent, a dynamic Preacher and Pastor.
I remember going on a trip to Culpepper Va , with his congregation to visit a connected
church family. I told the bus driver to turn right, keep straight and let God do the rest. Needless to say, we got lost. But God delivered us safely. We had a great time. I forgot Dr. Walker had a great sense of humor.
Rest well my friend, see you soon.

Requiesat en pace, Reverend Walker. I came to know John through WRUR, where he hosted (for many years) the late night radio show "Black Classical music" under his alternate identity, Talik Abdul Basheer. John (or as we knew him, Talik) was a wonderful man, and by sharing his love of Jazz originators he enlightened the Rochester community. I last saw John out and about before the Covid quarantine shut most social interaction down. He will be missed!
