ROCHESTER, NY – December 12, 2024
Robert "Bob" Richard Watson, beloved husband, father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2024. Born on June 8, 1947, in Manhattan, New York, to Elzie Watson and Margaret Rodgers Watson, he was the youngest of eight children in a family that instilled in him the values of strength, perseverance, and compassion.
Robert's life was one of remarkable achievement and dedication. A proud graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School, he earned a basketball scholarship to Shaw University embracing the transformative power of education and laying the foundation for a life defined by determination and purpose.
Robert's professional journey spanned decades of meaningful work in recreation, social services, and therapeutic programming. He began his career in healthcare, working in a hospital, before accepting a role as a recreational worker in Utica, NY. His leadership and vision soon earned him the position of Recreation Director at the Montgomery Neighborhood Center in Rochester, NY. Later, he joined the New York State Division for Youth as a Recreation Therapist, where he developed programs that empowered children and supported individuals facing mental health challenges. Robert concluded his distinguished career at the New York State: Rochester Psychiatric Center, retiring after 30 years of dedicated and impactful service.
Robert's work reflected his unwavering passion for creating environments where individuals could thrive. A strong advocate for drug awareness and substance abuse prevention, he believed deeply in the power of education and resources to empower individuals and support families. His impactful efforts were evident in both his professional roles and his dedication to service through Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, where he forged lifelong friendships and actively contributed to community initiatives.
A lifelong sports enthusiast, Robert was a devoted fan of the New York Knicks and New York Jets, following their seasons with fervent dedication. His passion for basketball extended beyond the stands, as he took to the court as a referee, officiating games with integrity and skill. Over the years, he inspired countless young athletes, instilling in them the values of fairness, discipline, and teamwork. His unwavering commitment to sports was more than a pastime—it was a reflection of his deep belief in fostering growth and opportunity for young people, both on and off the court.
Outside of work, Robert embraced life to the fullest. Known for his infectious smile and magnetic personality, he enjoyed "browsing" the stores, supporting his favorite teams, officiating basketball games, and engaging in spirited conversations. Robert truly "never met a stranger." His warmth and humor left an indelible mark on everyone he met. An avid runner, he completed marathons and inspired others with his dedication to fitness and perseverance. He was a faithful member of the YMCA. Even as his health declined due to dementia—a challenge he faced with remarkable courage over several years—Robert's love for his family, basketball, and mentoring young people never wavered.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Elzie Watson and Margaret Rodgers, and his seven siblings: Millicent Watson, Elzie Watson Jr., Elizabeth "Dorothy" Patterson, Jeannette Watson, Russell Watson, Ralph Watson, and Helen Corbett.
Robert leaves to cherish his memory; his loving wife of 43 years, Dorcet Nunley Watson; his three sons, Vernon (Madeleine) Bradley, Randon (Kalinda)Watson, and Rowan (Mindy) Watson; 7 grandchildren; Sister-in-Law, Anita (Christopher) King, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
